蚕は日本の伝統的な産業として、日本の経済を支えてきました。
私たちの祖父母は蚕を育て、生糸をつくる農家で、小さいころ遊んでいた納屋の天井には、逃げ出した蚕が紡いだ繭がついていました。子どものころ、蚕が繭をつくるときの習性を利用して、蚕を竹の骨組みに乗せて、うちわをつくったことがあります。
今回はその時の体験をヒントに、「まいおどり」という伝統工芸技術を用いて、グリッド上のフレームに生糸の膜をはり、ランプシェードにしました。
10匹の蚕が10日かけて作りあげるシェードは和紙にはできない造形を可能にし、特徴的な光の拡散をつくりだします。

Silkworms have been an integral part of Japan's traditional industries, supporting its economy for generations. Our grandparents were farmers who raised silkworms and produced raw silk. In the barn where we played as children, cocoons spun by escaped silkworms clung to the ceiling. As kids, we once experimented with the silkworms' natural cocoon-spinning behavior by placing them on a bamboo frame to create hand fans. Drawing inspiration from that experience, we used the traditional craft technique called "Maiodori" to create a silk filament membrane on a grid frame, transforming it into a lampshade.
