Bombix lightは蚕の糸でつくられた照明です。
蚕は日本の伝統的な産業として、日本の経済を支えてきました。
私たちの祖父母は蚕を育て、生糸をつくる農家で、小さいころ遊んでいた納屋の天井には、逃げ出した蚕が紡いだ繭がついていました。子どものころ、蚕が繭をつくるときの習性を利用して、蚕を竹の骨組みに乗せて、うちわをつくったことがあります。
その時の体験をヒントに、グリッド上のフレームに蚕を這わせること生糸の膜を作り、ランプシェードにしました。
10匹の蚕が10日かけて作りあげるシェードは和紙や人工シルクにはできない造形を可能にし、特徴的な光の拡散をつくりだします。

Bombix Light is a lamp made from silkworm thread.
Silkworm farming has long been a traditional industry in Japan and supported its economy. Our grandparents raised silkworms and produced raw silk. When we were children, we played in a barn where cocoons spun by escaped silkworms were attached to the ceiling.
As kids, we once used the silkworms’ natural behavior of spinning cocoons by placing them on a bamboo frame to make a fan. Inspired by this experience, we let silkworms move over a grid frame to create a thin silk membrane, which became the lampshade.
Each shade is made by 10 silkworms over 10 days. It creates forms that cannot be made with paper or artificial silk, and produces a unique diffusion of light.
